Microsoft’s Hyperlapse for Android will allow you to create smooth and silky videos

Microsoft today released its own Hyperlapse app for Android that allows users to create “smooth, stabilized time lapses from first-person videos.”

Think of an hyperlapse video as a sped up footage of your skiing trip, an excursion or any other first-person video. However, since a mobile video involves a lot of shakes and jerks, Microsoft’s Hyperlapse will fix these things out to deliver a “speedy and smooth” video.

The service is similar to Instagram’s Hyperlapse, which is only available for iOS devices. Microsoft’s Hyperlapse app, however, is available for selected Android devices as well as Windows Phone.

To make the video both speedy and smooth, the researchers came up with an algorithm that first creates an approximate 3D model of the landscape being filmed, and then identifies the dominant path that the camera took through that landscape. It then stitches together bits and pieces of different frames to create a smooth, stable hyperlapse that showcases the essence of the original video.

Additionally, the app is also able to create hyperlapse videos from already existing videos — something which Instagram’s Hyperlapse app is not capable of doing.

The full feature list of the Android app is below.

For now, ‘Hyperlapse Mobile for Android’ only supports selected Android devices running KitKat and Lollipop. The list of supported devices are as follows:

The app is currently in ‘preview’ and can be downloaded from the Play Store by joining this community first.
