In a bid to speed up software updates for its devices, LG today opened a global Software Upgrade Center in South Korea. This is LG’s first such facility that is focused on providing LG smartphone owners to roll out software updates on a timely and speedy manner.

LG says that apart from developing and rolling out software updates for its devices in a timely manner, the upgrade center will also be responsible to ensure a consistent user experience and stability on its devices.

Aligning after-sales support with customers’ needs is a top priority at LG,” said Mr. Jo Seong-jin, CEO of LG Electronics. “Stable and consistent upgrades will demonstrate to our customers that LG smartphones have long and reliable lifespans.”

The first results of this software upgrade center will be the Oreo update for the LG G6 which will start rolling out later this month in Korea followed by other markets.

Our Take

LG has traditionally been pretty slow in updating its devices to newer versions of Android. The company hardly ever rolls out monthly security updates for its devices as well, and it can take the company quite a few months to roll out a software update to fix some bugs. Thus, it remains to be seen how this upgrade center from LG will help speed things up in this regard.
