LG Chem has developed a hexagonal battery to be used in smartwatches that are up to 25% more energy efficient than traditional rectangular batteries.

The hexagonal battery will allow OEMs a bit of a leeway in designing their smartwatches as it will allow them make better use of the limited space inside the wearable.

LG Chem states that their hexagonal battery can increase the battery life of a smartwatch by up to four hours. It is unclear if LG is talking about standby time here or usage time, but nonetheless, four hours definitely sounds impressive.

The battery is reportedly expected to go into mass production sometime in the second half of 2015, which probably means we will see smartwatches using this battery go on sale at the very end of this year or from early next year.
