There is no denying the fact that Motion Launch on the HTC One (M8) is an extremely useful feature. Even Samsung with its kitchen-sink approach has not included any similar feature on the Samsung Galaxy S5, which is a bummer. Worry not though, as an XDA developer, Acela1230, has released an app on the Play Store — Knockr — that brings HTC’s Motion Launch to not just the Galaxy S5, but any OLED based Android device.

Knockr makes use of the OLED screen on the Galaxy S5, Moto X and other similar devices to achieve this functionality. Whenever you pick up your phone, Knockr will immediately switch on the display, after which you can use gestures to launch any of the pre-specified apps. It also allows users to launch the camera by long pressing the volume key if the phone is in landscape mode. By displaying a black screen, the app makes sure that it does not waste any significant battery power, which is also the reason why it is not available for non-OLED devices.

There are a few issues with Knockr though — it keeps the display switched on all the time, instead of only activating it when it detects any motion. This is not something that most users will prefer as it keeps the phone awake all the time and impacts battery life. The screen is only deactivated when the app discovers that your phone is in your pocket. On the Moto X, the navigation bar will also show up every once in a while when you use Knockr.

Knockr is a bit buggy right now but the developer has been taking constant feedback over at the app’s XDA thread to fix them and improve his app.

You can grab Knockr for free from the Play Store.
