Google today rolled out the v9.12.0 of Google Maps that brings with it two brand new features: a timeline view that provides a history of all the places you have been to; and the ability to save your starred places with a custom name.

The ‘Your Timeline’ view displays in great details your location history and even allows you to select a particular day in history. The Timeline is completely private and is only visible to you. In case you don’t want a particular location to appear in your history, you can delete it as well.

Apart from being available on Google Maps for Android, the Timeline view is also available on the desktop version of Maps. Keep in mind though that the Timeline view option will only be available if you have Location History enabled for your Google account.

In addition to Timeline view, the update to the Android app also adds the option to save a starred place with a custom name. This feature was present in an older version of Google Maps before Google removed it with an update to the app.

Google Maps v9.12.0 is rolling out in stages through the Play Store, but you can always manually sideload the update by grabbing the APK from here.
