Google Drive for Android update brings new UI, OCR, and more!

Google just rolled out a massive update for the official Google Drive app for Android bringing a nice UI update, optical character recognition and other usability improvements and enhancements. For starters, the UI has been updated with the new cards UI giving the app a very polished and sleek look. The new grid view mode also makes finding the your files much easier. For new Drive users, there is also a new introductory section showing the capabilities of Drive. .

However, the spotlight feature of this update is the ability to scan and save documents, receipts and letters to Google Drive and the ability to search for them through their content. The ability to download copies of files on your Google Drive folder is a nice addition as well.

The official change-log of the update is below -:

  • New grid view makes it easier to find your files
  • New quick preview lets you view photos and other files from within the app
  • Scan documents, receipts and letters for safe keeping in Drive; then search by contents once uploaded
  • Download a copy of files to your local device (Honeycomb+)
  • Spreadsheet editor now supports changing fonts, colors and cell alignment
  • View properties of files from within the editors
  • Bug fixes and visual improvements
