Samsung has confirmed to Reuters that it would be launching its own AI-powered digital assistant service with the Galaxy S8 next year. Samsung recently acquired Viv Labs, a startup that was founded by one of the creators of Siri.

The Korean company plans on integrating the technology acquired from Viv Labs into its upcoming digital assistant dubbed Viv. Samsung did not provide any information on what its digital assistant would be capable of doing, but it did mention that it will feature third-party apps and services integration.

“Developers can attach and upload services to our agent,” said Samsung Executive Vice President Rhee Injong during a briefing, referring to its AI assistant. “Even if Samsung doesn’t do anything on its own, the more services that get attached the smarter this agent will get, learn more new services and provide them to end-users with ease.”

Samsung currently bundles its own S Voice digital assistant on its Galaxy devices, but it is neither particularly useful nor smart enough to take on Google Assistant or Siri. After Viv, Samsung is also planning on acquiring more such firms to improve its AI and software capabilities.

It will be interesting to see how Samsung integrates its own digital assistant into the Galaxy S8 and how it lives side-by-side with Google Assistant/Now. Samsung is currently reeling from the Note 7 fiasco that has greatly damaged its brand value and reputation. The company needs to ensure that the Galaxy S8 turns out to be an impressive device to be able to regain customer confidence.
