Google had earlier officially confirmed that it plans on releasing the final release of Android 7.0 Nougat for Nexus devices, OEMs and push it to AOSP sometime in Q3. With the final Developer Preview build of the OS dropping last month, @evleaks now says that the final consumer build of Nougat will be released next month i.e. August.

Google has usually announced new Nexus devices and released a new version of Android in October, but this time around, it looks like the company is changing things around. While it did release Android 4.3 in July, it was a minor release targeted more towards tablets than to smartphones. An August release of Nougat will provide OEMs with more time in updating their flagship devices to it before the holiday season comes around.

Also, if Google does end up releasing Android 7.0 in August, it is likely that we will not see new Nexus handsets release alongside it. New Nexus handsets have always been released in October, and the lack of leaks surrounding HTC’s upcoming Nexus handsets add further credence to the unlikely fact of them launching next month.

Evan also confirms in his tweet that the Nexus 5 will not be receiving the Nougat update. Considering that the handset is reaching its third anniversary, this should not be surprising. However, since the handset is more than powerful enough to run Nougat, it is definitely disappointing to see Google not update the handset to Android 7.0.
