What’s the Difference between Redmi Y1 and Redmi Y1 Lite

After initially being unveiled last week, the Redmi Y1 and Redmi Y1 Lite went on sale in India today through Amazon India and Mi.com. Both handsets will also be making their way to offline stores and Mi Home stores across the country.

While both names have a similar sounding name, they are different from each other in quite a few ways. If you are confused between the Redmi Y1 and the Redmi Y1 Lite and are wondering which handset is better between the two, read below.

What’s the Difference between Redmi Y1 and Redmi Y1 Lite

Display, Build and Dimensions

  • The Redmi Y1 and Y1 Lite both feature a 5.5-inch 720p HD LTPS LCD display
    • The Redmi Y1’s display, however, is protected by 2.5D curved Corning Gorilla Glass which is missing from the Y1 Lite
    • Both phones offer Reading mode, Night Display, and color temperature adjustment
  • They feature a unibody aluminium build
  • The Redmi Y1 weighs in at 153g while the Y1 Lite weighs 150g
    • The Y1 is slightly thicker at 7.7mm while the Y1 Lite has a waistline of 7.5mm
  • Both phones have the same height and width of 153mm x 76.2mm

Specs, Storage, Camera

  • The Redmi Y1 is powered by an octa-core Snapdragon 435 chip running at 1.4GHz
    • The Y1 Lite is powered by a weaker octa-core Snapdragon 425 chip running at 1.4GHz
  • The base variant of Redmi Y1 features 3GB RAM and 32GB storage while the Redmi Y1 Lite comes with 2GB RAM and 16GB storage
    • Xiaomi is also selling a 4GB RAM/64GB storage variant of the Redmi Y1
  • Both phones come with a dedicated microSD card slot along with two nanoSIM card slots
  • They are powered by a 3080mAh battery
    • No quick/fast charge support in both phones
  • The Redmi Y1 and Y1 Lite feature a 13MP f/2.2 shooter with PDAF and HDR
    • They can also record videos in Full HD resolution
  • The Redmi Y1 features a 16MP f/2.0 selfie shooter with Selfie light
    • The Redmi Y1 Lite makes do with a 5MP f/2.0 shooter
  • The Redmi Y1 houses a fingerprint scanner at its rear which is missing from the Y1 Lite
  • Otherwise, both phones house the usual sensors like Infrared, Gyroscope, Accelerometer, Proximity sensor, eCompass, and Hall sensor
  • The usual connectivity features like VoLTE, Wi-Fi, dual-SIM, native video calling are also present

Software

  • At launch, the Redmi Y1 and Redmi Y1 Lite are running MIUI 8.5 based on Android 7.1.2 Nougat
    • Both phones will get the MIUI 9 update before the end of this month

Price and Availability

  • The Redmi Y1 is priced at Rs 8,999 for the 3GB RAM/32GB variant
    • The 4GB RAM/64GB variant is priced at Rs 10,999
  • The Redmi Y1 Lite is available in only 2GB RAM/16GB storage variant and costs Rs 6,999
  • Xiaomi is offering the Redmi Y1 and Y1 Lite in Gold and Dark Grey colors
  • Both phones are available on Amazon India, Mi.com, Mi Home, and Mi Authorised stores
