Additional Samsung Galaxy Gear details leak

Samsung is going to hold a press conference in 15 days in Berlin where everyone knows they’re going to announce the third generation Galaxy Note. Recently, however, it’s been discovered that Samsung will also announce a smartwatch during the same press conference. Said smartwatch will be called the “Galaxy Gear“, and until now we’ve had little to no information about it.

That changes today thanks to GigaOM and their sources. The site says they know these things about the Gear: It’ll have a 2.5 inch square display that uses OLED technology and has a resolution of 320 by 320 pixels. For you pixel per inch nerds out there, that’s roughly 180 PPI. It’ll be powered by a dual core Samsung Exynos 4212 clocked at 1.5 GHz, and it’ll use the Mali-400 MP4 GPU.

It gets even crazier. They go on to say the watch will have a camera built into the strap, it’ll have speakers, NFC, Bluetooth 4.0 Low Energy, and a whole bunch of sensors that will keep the display off until you’re looking at it, which will obviously help it conserve battery life.

Should you be excited? This is a hard one. First generation Samsung products are more often than not disappointing. There will be early adopters, sure, but I don’t consider myself to be one of those people who fits in that consumer category. I like things that “just work” and have been refined, so it’s the Gear II and Gear III I’m looking forward to, not whatever will be announced in two weeks.
