Xiaomi Mi A2

As revealed earlier, Xiaomi today launched the Mi A2 in India. The handset is the successor to the Mi A1, the first Android One handset from Xiaomi launched in association with Google last year.

The Mi A2 is a major upgrade over the Mi A1 in every possible way. The handset features a 6-inch FHD+ 18:9 aspect ratio display at the front without a notch. The Mi A1 from last year was based on the Mi 5x and the Mi A2 follows that trend as it is based on the Mi 6X launched by Xiaomi a couple of months ago in China.

Inside the Mi A2 is Qualcomm’s mid-range Snapdragon 660 chipset, 4/6GB RAM, and up to 128GB storage space. Other specs of the handset include a 3,000mAh battery with USB-C port, Quick Charge 4.0 support, Wi-Fi ac, Bluetooth 5.0, dual-SIM connectivity with VoLTE support, and more. A notable omission in the handset is the lack of a 3.5mm headphone jack.

Xiaomi is highlighting the camera capabilities of the Mi A2 which has seen a huge bump in performance compared to its predecessor. The dual-camera setup now comprises of a primary 12MP f/1.75 Sony IMX486 sensor with large 1.25um pixels. This is paired with a secondary 20MP Sony IMX376 sensor which also has a f/1.75 aperture. The secondary sensor uses 4-in-1 pixel binning to deliver enhanced photos in low-light scenario.

The same 20MP sensor is also used at the front to capture selfies. It is paired with a f/2.2 lens and a 4500K selfie light. Despite an Android One handset, the Mi A2 features Xiaomi’s AI-powered Beautify 4.0 to capture detailed selfies.

Being an Android One handset, the Mi A2 runs on a stock build of Android 8.1 Oreo. It does make use of Xiaomi’s own camera app instead of the one from Google to deliver an improved imaging experience.

The Mi A2 will go up for pre-order in India from August 9th on Amazon India, with the base variant featuring 4GB RAM and 64GB storage priced at Rs 16,999. The 6GB RAM/128GB variant will come at a later date in the country. The handset will be available in four colors: Lake Blue, Black, Rose Gold, and Gold.
