Last month, Sony updated its AOSP for Xperia program to add support for the Xperia Z1 and Z2 and updated the builds for all the supported devices to the very latest version of Android available in AOSP at that time: Android 4.4.4 KitKat.

Today, the company has posted a video where it shows off an AOSP build of Android 5.0 Lollipop running on its very latest flagship — the Xperia Z3. The Xperia Z1 and Z2 were also present in the video, though the demonstration was done by Sony on the Xperia Z3 only. It was only at the beginnig of this week that Google had pushed the source code of Android 5.0 Lollipop to AOSP.

Sadly, the company has not released the Lollipop AOSP builds for Xperia owners to download and try on their unlocked handsets as it is working on getting the required rights for distributing the necessary binary files.

The Japanese company also announced its new exclusive 3Beta initiative with the operator “3”in Sweden. Under this pilot programme, the company will be giving selected fans a chance to test drive early firmware of Android 5.0 Lollipop on their Xperia Z3 or Z3 Compact. By doing this, Sony expects to “gather as much early feedback as humanly possible in order to make the Sony User Experience on Android Lollipop as good as it possibly can be, before commercial rollout next year.”

The company plans on rolling out a similar initiative in other markets next year. Sony has promised to bring Android 5.0 Lollipop to its entire Xperia Z series from beginning of 2015.
