Less than a week after launching Samsung Pay in Singapore, Samsung has expanded its mobile payment service to Australia. Earlier in June, Samsung had launched Samsung Pay in Spain, making it the first European country where its contactless payment service was available.

Apple has already launched Apple Pay, its mobile payment service, in Australia a few months ago. However, Samsung Pay has one huge advantage over the former: it works with non-NFC/traditional PoS machines as well thanks to its MST technology.

“Today’s launch of Samsung Pay offers more than a secure and convenient way for Samsung smartphone owners to pay,” said Prasad Gokhale, Vice President, Mobile Division, Samsung Australia. “It’s the next development for Australians who use their smartphone as the central device to live, organise and enjoy their lives.

Samsung Pay will be supported by American Express and Citibank at launch at participating retailers. The payment service will be supported on the Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 edge, Galaxy S6 edge+, Galaxy Note 5, Galaxy S7, and Galaxy S7 edge, though availability will vary depending on your carrier.

Samsung Pay had more than 5 million users within six months of its launch in South Korea and the U.S. Since then, it has processed more than $1 billion transactions in South Korea alone.
