The latest report from Consumer Reports ranks Samsung’s latest flagships, the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+, for their excellent camera, display, and battery life. The report crowned Galaxy S8+ as the top smartphone, with its smaller sibling – Galaxy S8 – coming in second.

The only problems with Samsung’s new flagship handsets? Their prices. The unlocked Galaxy S8+ starts at $840, while the Galaxy S8 is just a wee bit cheaper at $720.

The Consumer Reports praises the new 18.5:9 tall and slim aspect ratio OLED display on Samsung’s new flagships. It does, however, note that while the phones are comfortable to hold, it will not be possible for most users to reach the upper corner of the screen with their thumb thereby necessitating two-hand use.

In their battery life testing, both Galaxies provided some of the best battery life the team has ever seen from a smartphone. The Galaxy S8+, thanks to its larger battery, did last longer in the battery tests which is why it ended up earning a higher score than its smaller sibling.

The 12MP rear shooter of the handsets also received high praise in the report, with Consumer Reports praising Samsung’s efforts to reducing the over-sharpening in the photos captured this time around. The report also notes that while the Galaxy S8 lacks a dual-camera setup similar to what is found on the iPhone 7 Plus and the LG G6, its rating does not suffer for any reason due to it.

Overall, thanks to its excellent performance, the Galaxy S8+ and the Galaxy S8 are now ranked as the top two smartphones in Consumer Reports ranking. The handsets edged past the likes of other newer flagships like the LG G6 and even the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, which are approaching their first anniversary.
