Paranoid Android is one of the more versatile custom ROMs available for Android along with CyanogenMod, AOSP and a few others. And one of the key features from this ROM is Peek, which allows the device to detect motion and turn on the display. This particular feature is now available for Android 4.4 KitKat running devices thanks to a developer named Zhe Lu.
It’s pretty much a variation of Motorola’s Active Display feature, but only detects motion to provide notifications and keeps the display off when it’s at a stationary position. This is a very handy feature and goes easy on the battery as well, since notifications are shown only when the user wants them.
The developer has apparently made it work on his Android 4.4.2 running Nexus 5, but it should be functional pretty much on every KitKat smartphone.
The app is not available in the Play Store, but users can manually sideload the apk file and install the feature to try it out. Luckily, Lu has made the app work on stock devices without requiring root access, so practically any KitKat user can get some Peek action, although there’s no guarantee that it might function well.
