Motorola, which has been selling its devices only through e-commerce portal Flipkart in India since its re-launch in the country a couple of years ago, is planning to start selling its devices through retail stores as well.

The launch of other Chinese OEMs in India who have also taken an online-only route for selling their devices in India have made a dent in the sale of devices from Motorola. Thus, by making its smartphones available in retail stores, Motorola will be able to reach a wider consumer base that will further boost the sales of its devices in the country.

“Motorola will go offline to make sure that more people buy Motorola products from brick-and-mortar stores in India,” Chen Xudong, President, mobile business group, Lenovo and chairman, Motorola Mobility operation board, told ET. He however added that online will remain an important part of the brand’s sales strategy in India.

Since Motorola is now owned by Lenovo, it will be able to easily use the latter’s strong offline retail channel to get its devices to brick and mortar stores throughout India.

While e-commerce sales in India are growing at a healthy pace with every passing quarter, majority of the consumers in the country still prefer to buy smartphones and other electronics from retail stores.

Motorola/Lenovo recently started local production of a couple of its devices in a new factory in Chennai, India that includes the Moto E 4G.
