Motorola today unveiled the Moto Z3 Play, the successor to the Moto Z2 Play from last year. The mid-range boasts a new design while still maintaining compatibility with Moto Mods previously launched by the company.
The Moto Z3 Play features a glass design which is splash-resistant. The handset is also slightly thicker than its predecessor with a waistline of 7mm, though the camera housing protrudes even further from the back. The phone comes with an 18:9 6-inch FHD+ AMOLED display, though unlike the OnePlus 6 and Samsung Galaxy S9, it still has its fair share of bezels at the top and bottom. The reduced chin size means the fingerprint scanner has been located on the Moto Z3 Play, though instead of being placed at the rear it is located at the left edge of the phone. However, it is not integrated into the power button as Motorola wanted to discovered it led to a slight delay in unlocking the device which it wanted to avoid.

As for the internals, the Moto Z3 Play comes with a Snapdragon 636 chipset clocked at 1.8GHz, packs 4GB RAM, and has up to 64GB of storage. It also features a 3,000mAh battery and runs on a near-stock build of Android 8.1 Oreo. As for the rear camera, there’s a dual-camera setup. The primary 12MP sensor features large 1.4um micron pixels, a f/1.7 aperture, Dual AF pixel, and its paired with a secondary 5MP depth sensor. The rear camera setup can capture portrait photos and also record videos in 4K resolution. The front of the Z3 Play houses an 8MP selfie shooter with a wide-angle lens. It is assisted by screen flash syncing and can record videos in Full HD resolution. Motorola has also partnered with Google to offer deep Google Lens integration on the Z3 Play. Thanks to this integration, the camera app can recognize landmarks, objects, and more using Google Lens.
The Moto Z3 Play will cost $499 in the United States. To sweeten the deal, Motorola will be bundling a Battery mod with the handset to complement its 3,000mAh battery.
