A lot of you prefer Android to iOS because it’s “flexible”. By that I mean you can hack just about every damn thing about your device, and make it your own. Custom ROMs, custom keyboards, camera apps, SMS apps, launchers, lock screens, the list just goes on and on. While I respect your drive to tinker, because I used to tinker myself back when I was a single teenager living with my mother oh so many years ago, most people will never know about the Android hacking scene.

For those that are in the “scene”, however, there has always been some hostility towards handset makers. They lock the parts of the devices that need to be modified, they don’t honor warranties should something go awry while you’re flashing a ROM, and other such unpleasantries.

Fortunately, there’s the Nexus program, and if you don’t want the Nexus, there are “Developer Edition” versions of phones. HTC had a Developer Edition One, and now Motorola will have their own Developer Edition Moto X. There’s no word as to the specs and what not, just this one line of text on Motorola’s website:

“Techies behold. Moto X Developer Edition will have a look all its own, 32 gigs, and of course—an unlockable bootloader.”
