Earlier today at an event in New Delhi, India, Motorola launched two variants of the Moto G: the Moto G4 and Moto G4 Plus. However these were not the only two handsets that the Lenovo-owned company announced today. The company also launched the Moto G Play, which was mysteriously missing from its press briefing today.

The official announcement from Motorola also does not provide any details about the Moto G Play, except for stating that it will be available globally “starting later this summer.” The Moto G Play is essentially the successor to the 2nd gen. Moto E from last year, with some refinements thrown in.

Apart from an updated design, the Moto G Play sports a 5-inch 720p display. It is powered by a Snapdragon 410 chipset clocked at 1.2GHz and packs 2GB RAM and 16GB of internal storage. There is also an 8MP f/2.2 shooter at the rear with an LED flash and a 5MP shooter in the front. Other notable specs include full HD video recording, dual-SIM connectivity, Wi-Fi b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.1, and LTE support.

Just like the other two variants of the Moto G4 announced today, the Moto G Play also runs on Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow and offers a ‘Pure Android’ experience. The handset lacks the IPX7 rating of the Moto G3, but it does feature a water repelling nano-coating. Lastly, the handset sports a 2800mAh battery with rapid charing support, though the charger will have to be purchased separately.

If the specs are anything to go by, it is quite clear that Motorola is replacing last year’s Moto E with the Moto G Play this year. Considering that the former’s image took quite a fair share of hit when the company decided not to update some variants of it to Lollipop, this move from Motorola does make sense.
