Motorola Marshmallow update plans

Motorola today detailed its Android 6.0 Marshmallow upgrade plan for its devices, and also revealed the enhancements that it will be making to its apps and services.

In its announcement, Motorola notes that Marshmallow provided it with a great opportunity to make sure that it apps and services are complementing features introduced in the OS and not competing with it. This is why the company has decided to retire Moto Assist, Motorola Migrate, and the Chrome extension for Motorola Connect with the Android 6.0 update. It will, however, still keep the ‘Driving’ mode feature of its Moto Assist app.

The Lenovo-owned company notes that the ‘Do not Disturb’ feature in Marshmallow is similar to its own Moto Assist, while the advanced backup and restore mechanism in Android 6.0 alleviate the need for its Migrate app.

The company also provided a list of devices that it will be updating to Android 6.0.

  • 2015 Moto X Pure Edition (3rd gen)
  • 2015 Moto X Style (3rd gen)
  • 2015 Moto X Play
  • 2015 Moto G (3rd gen)
  • 2014 Moto X Pure Edition in the US (2nd gen)
  • 2014 Moto X in Latin America, Europe and Asia2 (2nd gen)
  • 2014 Moto G and Moto G with 4G LTE2 (2nd gen)
  • DROID Turbo
  • 2014 Moto MAXX
  • 2014 Moto Turbo
  • Nexus 6

The list excludes the 2013 Moto X and the first and second generation Moto E, which is a bit surprising. Motorola does note that the list is not final in any way and its software update roll out plans can change anytime in the future.

The company did not provide any estimate on when it will start rolling out the Marshmallow updates for its devices, but given its history, it is likely that its flagship devices will be updated to the latest version of Android within a month or two.
