After quite a bit of teasing, Huawei today announced the Nova 4 featuring a 48MP rear shooter and a “hole-punch” display for the selfie camera at the front. The device is similar to the Honor View 20 which was teased by Huawei’s sub-brand Honor last week.

The Nova 4 packs two of the upcoming technology trends of 2019 for a premium mid-range smartphone: a 48MP rear shooter for capturing detailed photos when there’s plenty of light available and a hole in the display to avoid the notch and accommodate the 25MP selfie camera at the front.

Sadly, for the chipset, the Nova 4 comes with 2018’s technology. It makes use of Huawei’s in-house Kirin 970 chipset found inside its flagship devices from early this year. This is unlike the Honor View 20 which will sport the company’s new 7nm Kirin 980 chip. At the front of the Nova 4 is a 6.4-inch FHD+ (2310 x 1080) display, 8GB of RAM, 128GB of storage, and a fingerprint scanner located at the rear. There’s also a 3750mAh battery with 18W USB-C fast charging. Like other Huawei phones, the device also features an aluminum chassis sandwiched by 3D hyperboloid glass panels at the front and rear.

The 7.7mm thick handset will be available in five colors — Honey red, Su Yinlan, Fritillaria, and Bright Black. It runs on Android 9.0 Pie out of the box with the latest version of Huawei’s Emotion UI on top of it.

Huawei will be selling two different variants of the Nova 4 in China. The 48MP rear camera is priced at RMB 3,399 (~$500), while the downgraded 20MP unit carries an RMB 3,099 price tag. Like wither Huawei phones, the Nova 4 is unlikely to make its way to other parts of the world anytime soon.
