Taylor Wimberly, Huawei’s USA Ecommerce Customer Acquisition Manager, has announced through a Google+ post about Honor’s — Huawei’s sub-brand — impressive new software policy. The company is committing itself to provide customers “with access to new features (at least once every three months during the first 12 months) for up to 24 months following each product launch.”

The company will also keep providing security and “software updates to its devices to fix bugs and enhance user experience in a timely manner.” Honor is also promising to provide updates to devices for major security threats beyond this timeframe.

From this year we are making a commitment to provide customers with access to new features (at least once every three months during the first 12 months) for up to 24 months following each product launch. We will keep providing access to security and software updates to fix bugs and enhance user experience in a timely manner. Beyond this period we will continue to provide updates in response to any threats to user safety and security.  Our goal is to ensure customers have the best and safest possible experience on their Honor device.

In a nutshell, Honor is promising new software features for your device at least once every 3 months within the first 12 months of its launch. This will continue until 2 years since the device is launched, though the pace of software updates might slow down a bit.

The lack of timely software updates has been the Achilles heels of Chinese companies like OnePlus, ZTE, and Honor. By committing to regular software updates, the company is going a long way in instilling confidence among consumers who are potentially interested in its devices. Do note that Huawei/Honor have not promised monthly security updates for its devices like Samsung has been regularly doing.
