According to “an HTC executive who declined to be named”, the Taiwanese handset maker has sold “around 5 million” Ones since the device first went on sale. Now the source of this quote is The Wall Street Journal, so I’m confident that the number is accurate, but why isn’t HTC proud of their success enough to issue a press release? Anyway, this executive goes on to say that the company could easily sell more if they just had the right components on hand.

Translation: Component shortage.

It’s pretty amazing that HTC has managed to sell so many Ones, I was honestly expecting that number to be far lower. Still, with so many important people leaving the company (eight as of this morning), you really have to wonder if there’s a future for HTC.

Which side do I fall on in this whole One vs. GS4 debate? I’m going with Samsung, because they’ve proven that they care about software updates. My girlfriend’s father’s two year old Galaxy S II is going to get Android 4.2 next month. Meanwhile, the year old HTC One X has long been forgotten by HTC’s software guys. And I don’t even want to know how long One (2013) owners will have to wait for Android 4.2 Jelly Bean, much less Key Lime Pie.
