The CyanogenMod team today announced that they are bringing official CM11 support to the Android One handsets from Google.

Priced at roughly $100, the Android One handsets from Google is aimed at “the next billion users” in developing countries like India, Nepal, Bangladesh and other surrounding regions. The company worked with local manufacturers and carriers so that it could offer a decent smartphone experience on such low-end handsets to first time smartphone users.

Adding support for Android One devices is a major milestone for CyanogenMod since MediaTek devices are known for being extremely difficult to develop for. In fact, the Android One handsets are the first MediaTek devices to be officially supported by CyanogenMod.

Since all the three Android One devices share a very similar hardware, the CM team has unified their builds into one, thereby saving users from the hassle of finding the correct build for their device.

As per the changes announced last week, a new CM11 build will only be released every week on Sunday for these devices. The CM team is also working on bringing CM12, which is based on Android 5.0 Lollipop, to these devices.
