Asus might have little presence in the smartphone market, but it definitely managed to catch the attention of consumers with its impressive ZenFone 2 series of smartphones last year. For their price, the phones offered great performance, and now since they are almost a year old, many customers are eagerly anticipating the launch of its successor — the ZenFone 3.

Asus usually unveils its new smartphones at Computex ever year, but this time around, the company has changed its plan. Instead of unveiling the ZenFone 3 series of smartphone at Computex, which is on May 30, the company’s CEO revealed that the handsets will be unveiled sometime in June. The handsets will then be made available in more than six countries in August, including Southeast Asia, Brazil, Russia and Europe.

He also clarified that Asus has switched over to using Qualcomm’s chipsets inside its smartphones. Asus was among the only major smartphone OEM to make use of Intel chips in its smartphones. The latter, however, recently announced that it is exiting the smartphone market.

For the ZenFone 3 family of smartphones, 90% of the models will be powered by Qualcomm’s processors, while the rest will be powered by MediaTek’s chipsets. The CEO also confirmed that ZenFone 3 will focus on the mid-range segment of the smartphone market, with the Taiwanse company also competing with Huawei and Oppo in the US$300+ segment in China. The company expects the ZenFone 3 Max to account for nearly 2/3rd of the total ZenFone 3 shipments, with the ZenFone 3 Deluxe and ZenFone 3 accounting for the remaining share.
