Sony is unshackling Android M from Google’s Nexus devices. On Monday, the company announced that 10 of its Xperia devices would be able to run Android M. You can now download a test build of the next generation of Android to any of the following Sony Xperia smartphones and tablets:

  • Xperia E3
  • Xperia M2
  • Xperia T2
  • UltraXperia T3
  • Xperia Z1
  • Xperia Z1 Compact
  • Xperia Z2
  • Xperia Z2 Tablet
  • Xperia Z3
  • Xperia Z3 Compact

Note that this version of Android M is built from the Android Open Source Project, which means it won’t come with Google apps or services. You’ll also have to jump through several steps to make this happen, as Sony’s instructions tell you to download a set of files from Google, additional files from Sony, and then compile them all on your desktop with the proper software. If you’re not a developer, this isn’t for you.

The lack of Google apps and services also means you won’t be able to test out Chrome, Gmail, or Google Now’s performance. If you want a more Googly experience and have a Nexus 5, 6, or 9, you can try out Android M right now by following our guide.

Why this matters: Android runs on a lot of devices—over 19,000 and counting. The more that can give Android M a test run before, the fewer bugs we’re likely to see. It’s a great move by Sony to make this available, one that other manufacturers should follow.
