Google has been working on the idea of launching a web-based portal for Android Messages, the company’s go-to option for standard text messaging.

We heard about it earlier this year, and now, at least part of the feature has gone live. If you travel over to messages.android.com, you’ll be greeted with a site that shows you a big QR code for scanning, as well as some brief instructions on how to get everything up and running. That includes scanning that QR code from within the Messages app, which will then launch the platform so you can text from your laptop or desktop, right from a dedicated website.

Here are the steps:

• On your phone, open Messages
• Tap the More options menu and select “Messages for web”
• Scan the code with your phone

While Google is preparing to launch this feature, it’s apparently not available quite yet. If you do go through the setup process, you’ll find that the “Messages for web” part in the settings option isn’t available to select. That’s the case at the time of publication, but that could change soon. Which very well may be the case, considering the website is now live.
