WSJ: LG’s flexible phone will be called the G Flex, and it’ll have a massive 6.0 inch display

Yesterday I shared a rumor from ZD|Net Korea that said LG was going to launch a flexible screen smartphone later this month called the LG Z and that it would have a 6.0 inch display. Today, that rumor got tweaked by The Wall Street Journal, who says the name of the device will actually be the “G Flex” and that it’ll come out in November, but they do confirm the massive 6.0 inch screen. Said screen will use plastic AMOLED technology, so this will be, as far as I can tell, the first flagship LG phone to use AMOLED. That’s usually a Samsung’s thing.

Speaking about Samsung, there are countless rumors floating around the internets that they too will launch a phone with a flexible AMOLED display, but their phone will be nothing more than a limited edition variant of the Galaxy Note 3. Way back in the days of the Galaxy S II, Samsung actually had trouble making enough AMOLED panels, so some emerging markets and Eastern European countries were given a variant that used LCD tech. Only reason I bring this up is because a simple display swap doesn’t sound too hard.

Will either of these devices be sold internationally? That’s the million dollar question, isn’t it? My gut tells me no, that the G Flex and Note 3 Limited Edition will be a Korea only thing due to nature of the exotic display technology being used. Yields are probably horrifically bad at this point, but hey, you got to prove to people you have bright engineers, right?
