Sony Xperia Z3 in the wild

Sony is known to operate on a six-month flagship release cycle with modest specs update over its preceding device. However, if the leaked specs of the upcoming Xperia Z3 are anything to go by, the company might be taking things a bit too far (or not) this time.

According to @evleaks, the Xperia Z3 will come with a Snapragon 801 processor clocked at 2.5GHz, an Adreno 330 GPU, 3GB of RAM and a 20.7MP Exmor R camera sensor with an F/2.0 aperture and G-Lens. Sounds a bit too familiar? That’s because the Xperia Z2 sports the exact same specs as well.

The only minute difference here is that the Z3 will come with an MSM8974AC variant of the Snapdragon 801 while the Z2 comes with the MSM8974AB variant clocked at 2.3GHz. Apart from that, there seems to be no other differences between the two devices in the specs department.

@evleaks also suggests that the Z3 will sport a 5.15-inch 1080p display, which if true, will actually be slightly smaller than the 5.2-inch panel found on the Z3.

Leaked pictures of the Z3 suggest that the handset will sport the same OmniBalance design language as its predecessor, though Sony seems to have tweaked the design to make it more ergonomic.

The Xperia Z2 was already a minor upgrade over its predecessor, the Z1, and the Z3 seems to be blurring that line even further by hardly offering any upgrade over the Z2. Perhaps, Sony is planning on releasing the Xperia Z3 in the United States on all carriers, which seems to be the only way here to differentiate the device from its predecessor.
