In an age where Optical Image Stabilisation (OIS) is being used by most OEM’s to improve image quality of the camera in their devices, Sony has gone in a whole different direction — digital image stabilisation. For the upcoming Xperia X and Xperia X Performance, Sony has decided to ditch OIS in favour of SteadyShot — a technology that is based on digital stabilisation as opposed to physical.

Both the Xperia X and Xperia X Performance share the same camera module (23 MP rear camera) and come with SteadyShot technology in-built into them. To display the maverick that is SteadyShot, Sony released a video that highlights the feature. To do this, they shot footage on a Sony Xperia X while cycling and showed the subsequent video with and without SteadyShot activated.

SteadyShot on it’s own is not a new technology, having made its debut in the Sony Xperia series a long time ago and having been subsequently implemented in many more Sony Xperia devices since. Yet Sony has decided to highlight ore reiterate this feature alongside the launch of the new Xperia X and Xperia X Performance.
