In a recent interview with The Korean Times, Samsung’s CEO J.K. Shin revealed the reason as to why the company’s latest flagships — the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge — don’t come with a Qualcomm processor.

When questioned about why Samsung went with its own Exynos processor inside the Galaxy S6, Shin revealed that Samsung has always used the best components inside its flagship devices to differentiate it from others. This clearly indicates that Samsung did not think the Snapdragon 810 chip was up to the mark in terms of performance, battery life and heat dissipation compared to its own Exynos 7420 SoC.

“Samsung previously used more Qualcomm mobile processors. But we are flexible. If Qualcomm chips are good enough, then we will use them. Samsung always uses the best-quality components and materials to differentiate our products from those by rivals,” said J.K. Shin, Samsung’s CEO.

Samsung is one of the largest customer of Qualcomm and the company has always used the latter’s chipset in its high-end devices that were released across key regions in the world. Thus, many were surprised when initial reports about Samsung using its own Exynos chipset inside the Galaxy S6 started popping up. However, as initial reviews of the G Flex 2 and hands-on of the One M9 indicate, the Snapdragon 810 does suffer from performance and overheating issues. Early results also show Samsung’s Exynos 7420 chipset absolutely destroying Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 810 chipset in benchmarks.

Shin also talked about the Galaxy S6 in the video and hoped that the launch of the handset would help in raising the company’s stock prices. He further said that Chinese knockoffs don’t bother the company much because of its quick pace of innovation.
