Earlier this week, OnePlus unveiled the OnePlus 5, their 2017 flagship killer. While the OnePlus 3/3T was widely praised by users and reviewers alike, its camera performance was constantly pointed out as not being flagship killer like the rest of the phone. With the OnePlus 5, the company has gone all in on the camera with a dual camera setup similar to that of the iPhone 7 Plus.
The dual camera setup is also the reason through which the company hopes to justify the higher price tag of the OnePlus 5 which is almost approaching other flagship handsets in the market. In an interview with The Verge, OnePlus’ co-founder Carl Pei said the company had spent a majority of the time working on the camera of the handset to ensure it offers a great performance. The dual camera setup does allow the OnePlus 5 to offer a Portrait mode similar to what is seen on the iPhone 7 Plus.
So, how good is the OnePlus 5’s camera? Does it live up to the hype? Check the camera samples from the phone below and decide for yourself.
- That wide aperture lens does allow the OnePlus 7 to capture photos with some nice bokeh
- The camera has oversaturated the red color of the flower here
- You can get some good macro shots on the OnePlus 5
- The ‘Portrait’ mode still leaves a lot to be desired…
- The bokeh effect applied by it is uneven and not properly done
- Despite using HDR mode, the harsh sunlight ensured that the camera could not capture the color of the trees properly
- The 2x SmartCapture zoom makes it possible to take photos that would not have been possible otherwise. In daylight, the quality is pretty good as well…
- In low light, the OnePlus 5’s primary 16MP shooter fails to capture enough details due to the small pixels
- Its better to avoid using the secondary 20MP sensor in lowlight as evident here
- Low light performance is not up to the mark….
- …And the lack of OIS is definitely felt in some situations
