OnePlus today unveiled their much anticipated handset — the OnePlus 2. Just like its predecessor, the OnePlus 2 sets a new bar for smartphones in 2015 in terms of the price-to-performance ratio.
The OnePlus 2 packs not only top-notch specs, but also a decent build quality. The handset comes with a magnesium alloy mid-frame that will greatly help in improving its in-hand feel. The volume and power keys along with the new alert slider have been made of polished steel to further give the handset a premium feeling. The alert slider is similar to the mute switch found on the iPhone, but it features three different modes: one for priority notifications; another one for all notifications; and lastly a complete silent mode.
On the front, the OnePlus 2 comes with a 5.5-inch 1080p In-Cell touch display. While the display size and resolution remain the same as its predecessor, it now features improved contrast ratio, better sunlight eligibility, higher brightness levels, and more.
As for the internals, the OnePlus 2 comes with a Snapdragon 810 v2.1 processor clocked at 1.8GHz, an Adreno 430 GPU, 4GB LPDDR4 RAM, 64GB of storage space, and a 3300mAh battery. There is also a touch-based fingerprint scanner integrated into the home button of the phone. The OnePlus 2 is also the first Android smartphone from a known brand to feature a Type-C USB port. Apart from the usual other connectivity features, the OnePlus 2 also comes with dual-SIM LTE connectivity — a feature that is not usually found in high-end Android devices.
OnePlus has heavily improved the camera system with the OnePlus 2. The 13MP rear camera features an F/2.0 aperture and 1.3u pixels for better low-light photography. The inclusion of OIS is also helpful here as it allows the camera sensor to cancel out jerks. There is also a laser AF sensor on the phone that sits right below the 13MP camera sensor to allow the system to focus in less than 0.3 seconds on any subject.
On the software front, the OnePlus 2 runs on OxygenOS that is based on Android 5.1 Lollipop. While not as feature rich as Cyanogen OS, the OS still comes with a number of features like App Permissions, built-in support for custom icon packs, a brand new camera app, LED customisation, and more.
The OnePlus 2 will be available by default with a Sandstone Black cover, though the company will also be selling many other StyleSwap covers to go with it.
The OnePlus 2 will be available for sale in United States, China, India, Canada and other countries from August 11th. The company will also expand to South East Asia later this year.
The 16GB/3GB variant of the handset will be available for $329, while the 64GB/4GB variant will set you back by $389.
