Another day, another rumor about the Samsung Galaxy Note III. Today’s latest speculation, courtesy of SamMobile, says the Note III will be the exact same size as the Galaxy Mega 5.8. They also say it’ll have a 5.99 inch 1080p AMOLED screen that uses the same subpixel configuration as found in the GS4, it’ll have a new Exynos 5 Octa that uses ARM’s Mali-450 MP GPU, and it’ll have 3 GB of RAM.
I want to focus on the size for a second, because not a lot of people have paid attention to the Mega 5.8. That device is 162.6 mm tall by 82.4 mm wide. For the sake of connivence and to lower costs, it makes sense for Samsung to use the same chassis to manufacture the Note III. So how do the dimensions of Mega 5.8 compare to other large Samsung phones?
The original Note, the one that everyone, myself included, laughed at, came in at 146.85 mm tall by 82.95 mm wide. I’d like to point out that the original Note used a 16:10 aspect ratio screen, whereas the Note II uses a 16:9 panel. Speaking about the Note II, it’s 151.1 mm tall by 80.5 mm wide.
That means the Note III, assuming the information on SamMobile is correct, will be half a millimeter narrower than the original Note, but it’ll be almost 16 mm taller!
I’m not sure how I feel about that. But I guess I’ll find out soon enough. The Note III will likely be announced at IFA in Berlin, which kicks off during the first week of September. We’re four months away from that, which may sound like a lot of time, but it’ll fly by.
