The existence of two new Nexus-branded smartphones isn’t official by any means, but if a new rumor is to be believed, Verizon Wireless customers have something to look forward to.

According to a tweet from serial leaker Evan Blass (@evleaks), Verizon Wireless is set to carry both new Nexus smartphones later this year. However, there’s a bit of a caveat. Blass’s tweet says Verizon is going to carry both “Nexus” smartphones, and then adds that we should “note the quotation marks.” Unfortunately there isn’t any other information regarding the rumored launch, so what the quotations are supposed to mean is still anyone’s guess.

However, the easy bet would be that Verizon might be preparing to rebrand the devices –maybe even as Droid handsets— or, perhaps even worse, put its own proprietary apps on the device right out of the box. Verizon getting in the way of monthly security updates, or future Android updates in general, is also a concern.

Still, that’s speculation at this point. With HTC rumored to be prepping two new Nexus smartphones to launch later this year, and with support for Verizon apparently in the works, customers under the Big Red umbrella should probably wait on upgrading just a bit longer.
