Android Marshmallow

Google today announced the release of the final preview build of Android M, which it is going to call Android 6.0 Marshmallow

Additionally, the company also released the final Android 6.0 SDK and opened up Google Play for developers to publish apps that target the new APIs introduced in Marshmallow. The final SDK of Android Marshmallow can be downloaded by developers through the SDK Manager in Android Studio.

The last release of the Android Marshmallow Developer Preview is “near final” but not the final release of the OS, which will be launched “later this fall.” If you are already running the Developer Preview 2 of Android M on your Nexus 5, Nexus 6 or Nexus 9, you will automatically get an OTA update to the last release of Marshmallow within the next one week. If you cannot wait for the OTA update to land, you can grab the updated Developer Preview images from here and install it manually on your device.

Google has highlighted a couple of changes that are included in the final release of Android 6.0, but notes that API updates compared to the previous developer previews are incremental.

Android Platform Change:

  • Final Permissions User Interface — we updated the permissions user interface and enhanced some of the permissions behavior.

API Change:

  • Updates to the Fingerprint API — which enables better error reporting, better fingerprint enrollment experience, plus enumeration support for greater reliability.
