Samsung is dropping the latest Snapdragon processor and going with its own for the Galaxy S6. A Bloomberg report says the newest Qualcomm chip overheated during Samsung’s testing. The 64-bit Snapdragon 810 is the latest from Qualcomm and is planned for several high-end phones this year.

This didn’t just impact Qualcomm’s ego—the company’s stock took a 3.5 percent dip, its sharpest decline in two months.

Samsung says it’s going with its own Exynos chip for the Galaxy S6, the first time it is doing so with a U.S. version of a phone (many Samsung phones already ship with Exynos ships in some parts of the world). That’s because previous models of its system-on-a-chip didn’t include an integrated LTE modem. Its newest option, the 64-bit Exynos 7 Octa, does. The report didn’t indicate which specific chip Samsung would be using in the final build of the Galaxy S6.

We should see the finished product of the Galaxy S6 at Mobile World Congress in March, along with other flagships like the HTC One M9. Other reports indicated that Samsung is also going with an iPhone-style fingerprint sensor and dialing back TouchWiz to make its next phone more appealing.

Greenbot will be at Mobile World Congress to give a full report on everything that’s announced.

The story behind the story: Color us a bit skeptical about Samsung’s motivations here. Going with its own chip would give Samsung a nice way to pitch the value of its processor-making prowess to other companies. With sales of its Galaxy smartphone line declining, it’s going to rely now more than ever on its 40-year-old memory chip unit, and other semiconductors, for making money. Samsung just built a $40 million factory outside Seoul.
