Android 6.0.1 brings power button camera shortcut to older Nexus devices

Samsung added a simple yet powerful feature to its smartphones this year: the home button can be double tapped to launch the camera from anywhere in the interface. Google implemented a similar feature in the power button on the Nexus 6P and Nexus 5X, and it has now brought the useful shortcut to existing Nexus devices with the Android 6.0.1 update.

That’s right. The Nexus 5, 6, 7 (2013) and 9 now support the ability to launch the camera app with a quick double tap of the power button. Like the Nexus 6P and 5X, this works both when the screen is off and when a device is being used, and it’s great to see Google isn’t keeping it exclusive to its newest Nexus offerings. Of course, it’s too bad the company can’t go back and improve the actual camera on those devices, but at least users will now have a faster way of getting down to shooting images.

Android 6.0.1 will start rolling out today to all the aforementioned Nexus devices, with factory images already available online.
