After the Nexus devices, the OnePlus One is among the most popular handset in the Android community. This means that there are plenty of mods, ROMs and kernels for the handset from a bunch of talented developers that try to extract the maximum performance from the device.

If you are new to the whole custom ROM scene and are looking to flash one on your OnePlus One, check out our recommendations of the 5 best custom ROMs available for the device to help make your decision easier.

Do note that flashing any custom ROM on your OnePlus One will wipe the device clean of all your data, so make sure to create a backup before you install any of the ROMs mentioned below.

CM12 nightlies

The Cyanogen team develops the official CyanogenMod 11S ROM for the OnePlus One, so its no surprise that the CM12 nightlies — based on Android 5.0 Lollipop — is among the best ROMs available for the handset.

Compared to CM11, CM12 nightlies don’t offer many new features, but they are stable enough to be used as a daily driver without any issues. They also come with a new touch panel firmware that further improves the touchscreen performance of the device.

You can find a roundup of all the features in CM12 here, while you can download official nightlies of the ROM for the OnePlus One (codenamed Bacon) from here.

crDroid

crDroid ROM

crDroid is my personal go-to ROM on any Android device I use. The ROM is developed by Cristiano Matos and is based on CyanogenMod’s sources with additional customization features sprinkled throughout the ROM. Some of the additional features that crDroid features over CyanogenMod includes the ability to completely customize the function of the hardware navigation buttons, change the status bar clock’s color and font, increase or decrease the navigation bar height and more.

The ROM is available only for a handful of devices, with the OnePlus One being one of them. Since crDroid is based on CyanogenMod’s sources, it is also stable enough to be used as a daily driver. The developer also actively updates the ROM to add new features and fix existing bugs.

You can find the download link of crDroid for the OnePlus One here. Make sure to head over to their official Google+ community for any kind of support.

Euphoria OS

Euphoria OS for OnePlus One

Developed by Mahdi786, Euphoria OS is also based on CyanogenMod’s sources. Just like crDroid, Euphoria OS packs in additional customization options over and above of what CyanogenMod already offers.

Of all the ROMs present in this list, Euphoria OS easily offers the most customization options. This includes an LED manager, Profiles, Hardware keys customization, Privacy guard and more. Thus, if you are only looking for customizations, look no further than Euphoria OS for your OnePlus One. The

SlimLP

Slim-ROM

SlimLP is one of the most unique ROMs out there. Like all the other ROMs in this list, SlimLP offers plenty of customization options, but also offers some features that are not present in other ROMs. This includes Shake Events, Slim Launcher, a new Camera app with True View, Dark Slim and more.

Since the first Lollipop build of the ROM was released only earlier this week, some of the trademark Slim features are still missing from the ROM. Nevertheless, it is just a matter of time before the developer ports his code to work with the latest version of Android.

Paranoid Android

Easily the least feature rich ROM in this list, the Paranoid Android team is known for adding features to their ROM that actually improve usability and offer a unique user experience rather than adding them just for the sake of adding it.

Since the Paranoid Android team released the first build of their ROM, based on Android 5.0 Lollipop only at the beginning of this month, the ROM lacks a lot of their signature features for now. In its current state, the ROM is basically an AOSP build of Android with a few features and enhancements. However, it is only a matter of time before the Paranoid Android team ports all their unique features to Lollipop and add some new ones as well.

If you are a fan of the work of the Paranoid Android team, you will be glad to know that the same team is also responsible for the upcoming Oxygen OS ROM for the OnePlus One.
