The 12MP camera of the Galaxy S7 has piqued everyone’s interest. After all, Samsung claims that despite the lower resolution sensor, the camera on the Galaxy S7 is better than almost any other smartphone camera in the market and rightfully so.

The Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge are scheduled to go on sale in most markets on March 11, so until then, it is not possible to get an idea of how the 12MP shooter on the handset stacks up against the likes of the iPhone 6s, Galaxy S6 and other smartphones with great cameras.

Nonetheless, some folks over at the show floor of Mobile World Congress were smart and quick enough to take some comparison shots of the Galaxy S7, Galaxy S6 and the iPhone 6s, which

Now, before you look at the comparisons shot below, remember that they were taken from a pre-retail unit of the Galaxy S7 running a non-final firmware. Companies are known to tweak a few things before the launch in the retail firmware, which can affect the camera performance as well.

Galaxy S7 vs. iPhone 6s

The first comparison photo we are looking here is between the iPhone 6s and Samsung Galaxy S7.

The photo shot from the Galaxy S7 is certainly brighter than the one taken from the iPhone 6s. While the image from the S7 has a yellowish tinge to it, it is tough to say which phone has captured the scene more accurately without comparison shots from other phones.

Other sample shots posted by PhoneArena also show a similar trend: the photos from the Galaxy S7 are brighter, but they have a yellowish tinge to them.

Galaxy S7 vs. Galaxy S6 edge+

The PhoneArena team also posted a photo taken from the Galaxy S6 edge+ and the Galaxy S7. The former houses the same camera setup as the Galaxy S6, with only some minor improvements in processing.

The photos were taken inside a box set up by Samsung, which had a luminance of 1.5 lux. Both phones were then set at the same settings before taking a shot: 1/6 shutter speed and ISO at 640. This will give one a good idea of what the improvements are on the Galaxy S7 camera compared to the Galaxy S6 edge+ in the same condition and at the exact same settings.

In the above image, the photo taken from the Galaxy S6 edge+ seems to have a purple-ish tinge to it, while the photo from the Galaxy S7 looks more clear. Nonetheless, the difference between the two — even when zoomed in —  is relatively minor, with the S7 better able to keep noise in check.

Again, take the above comparison shots from PhoneArena only as a preliminary comparison and don’t go ahead and crown the Galaxy S7 as the winner. While the handset’s performance compared to the iPhone 6s definitely seems impressive, the imaging performance of the final retail unit can very well be different from what we see above. Plus, the camera is yet to be put through its paces in various lighting conditions, which will test its capabilities better.

Nonetheless, what do you think about the Galaxy S7’s camera performance based on the above comparison shots?
