There’s little doubt in my mind that the Moto X is an incredible phone. Unfortunately, I’m living on the “wrong” side of the planet. You see, in order to buy a Moto X, you have to live either in the USA, Canada, or a handful of countries in Latin America. Why the limited roll out? Beats me. Anyway, rumor has it that a cheaper version of the Moto X will be rolling out to a broader international audience. Said variant might be called the DVX.
Little is known about the device, but let me speculate a bit. First, that 720p screen has to go. It’s easily one of the most expensive components in the device. Second, kiss LTE support goodbye. High speed 4G LTE networks are only now coming to Europe, and in emerging markets they’re at least a year or two out. Third, expect to see that 10 megapixel “ClearPixel” camera be swapped out for the most generic 5 megapixel sensor that can be found in China.
Oh and one more thing, since it costs a lot of money to provide custom colors Moto X units, it looks like Motorola will make the DVX in such a way that you’ll be able to replace the entire back. This isn’t rocket science by the way. Nokia does this with practically all their low to mid range Windows Phones.
When will the DVX be unveiled? Hard to say, but I’m confident it’ll be this year.
