Oppo Project Spectrum

After months of beta testing, Oppo today publicly released its first ROM under Project Spectrum for owners of Find 7. The ROM offers the best of both worlds for advanced users of the handset: a near-stock build of Android with the some of the best features found in ColorOS.

The first Project Spectrum ROM is based on Android 5.1.1 Lollipop and is only available for the Find 7 and Find 7a. Some of the features from ColorOS that are present in the ROM include screen-off gestures like double tap to wake, ColorOS camera, MaxxAudio and more. Oppo promises that it will release stock based Lollipop build for its other devices soon. The company also plans on updating the ROM to Marshmallow early next year.

For now, Oppo will continue to preload ColorOS on its smartphones. This is because in markets like China and India, customers prefer a heavily customised skin of Android with many locale specific features over a vanilla build of the OS. The company, nonetheless, plans to continue with Project Spectrum as it will allow it to “better connect to consumers in Western markets.”

Oppo had first started beta testing a near stock build of Lollipop for its flagship Find 7 handset earlier this year, so this public release should not really come as a surprise.

If you own a Find 7 or a Find 7a and are interested in flashing the Project Spectrum based ROM, head over to the Oppo forums for the download link and installation instructions.
