Earlier today, Google released the first Developer Preview of Android 7.1 Nougat for the Nexus 6P, Nexus 5X, and Pixel C. The latest version of Nougat comes with a bunch of minor new features like support for circular icons, app shortcuts, bug fixes, new API levels, and more.

Since Google has already launched the Pixel with Android 7.1, it says that the first Developer Preview of the OS for Nexus devices is more at beta quality than alpha. This means that the OS is worth using as your daily driver since it is unlikely to feature any show stopping bugs. For now, the Android 7.1 Developer Preview is only available for the Nexus 6P, Nexus 5X, and Pixel C, but Google plans to extend it to other devices in November.

So, if you own a Nexus 6P or 5X and want to try out the latest version of Nougat on your device, follow the steps below. Instead of flashing the Android 7.1 factory image, we are going to enroll your device into the Android Beta program. This way you will be able to upgrade to the latest version of Nougat without having to format your device.

Step 1: Head over to the Android Beta program website. You will first have to sign in with the same Google account that is currently syncing on your Nexus device.

Step 2: A list of available devices eligible for the beta program will be shown on the page that opens up next, with an Enroll Device button next to it.

Step 3: Click on it, accept the terms and conditions from the window that pops up, and click Join beta. And that’s it! You will soon receive an OTA update on your Nexus device that will install the Android 7.1 Nougat Developer Preview build on it. If you don’t get an OTA update immediately, wait for a few minutes and then check for an update again. You can also try restarting your device.

With your device enrolled into the Android beta program, you will automatically get OTA updates for future Developer Preview builds of Nougat as well, which is scheduled to arrive sometime before the end of this year.
