Earlier this week, Hugo Barra announced that he will be leaving Xiaomi to go back to Silicon Valley. Today, Barra revealed that he will be joining Facebook to lead all of the company’s virtual reality efforts. He will be the VP of virtual reality at the social networking giant and lead the Oculus team.

Barra notes that his mission at Facebook would be to make the technology “breakthroughs quickly and readily available to the widest possible spectrum of humanity.” Mark Zuckerberg, founder and CEO of Facebook, also made a post announcing the news. He adds in his announcement that like himself, Barra also believes that virtual and augmented reality are going to be the next major computing platform.

Hugo Barra was working at Xiaomi for the last 3.5 years as the Vice President for international markets. Under his presence, Xiaomi expanded to India, Brazil, Russia, and other international markets, though the company has only met with major success in India. Before Xiaomi, Barra was the SVP and product spokesperson for Android at Google.

It will be interesting to see what and how Oculus and Facebook’s VR division does under the leadership of Barra.
