HTC U Ultra

HTC today officially announced its latest handset under its new ‘U’ branding: the HTC U Ultra. The handset features a new design language and unlike other phones from HTC over the few years, it makes use of glass at the both front and back.

The rear features a 3D contoured glass and a liquid surface for a highly reflective finish. Apart from the design, the front 5.7-inch display of the U Ultra also sets it apart from other devices in the market. While the primary 5.7-inch display has a Quad HD resolution, a secondary 2.05-inch display with a 160×1040 resolution sits at the top of it. The implementation is very similar to what you would find on LG’s V10 and V20 handsets, with the secondary display being used to show your frequent contacts, apps, calendar events, notifications, and more.

HTC has also laid great emphasis on the camera of the U Ultra. The 12MP UltraPixel shooter at the rear features a f/1.8 aperture, laserAF sensor, and it is capable of recording 4K videos. The front features a 16MP selfie shooter, with an UltraPixel mode that takes 4MP selfies with higher details.

The full specs of the HTC U Ultra are as follows:

  • 2.15 GHz Snapdragon 821 CPU
  • 5.7-inch Quad HD display (2560×1440)
  • 2.05-inch secondary display (160×1040)
  • 4 GB RAM
  • 64 GB or 128 GB of internal storage
  • 3,000 mAh battery
  • 12-UltraPixel rear-facing camera with 4K video recording
  • 16-megapixel front-facing camera with 1080p video recording
  • Android 7.0 Nougat with HTC Sense
  • HTC USonic (BoomSound with Adaptive Audio)
  • HTC Sense Companion
  • Always-on “OK Google” recognition
  • Four omnidirectional mics

HTC will also be selling a sapphire edition of the U Ultra with 128GB storage in selected markets. The handset runs on Android 7.0 Nougat out of the box, and it comes with Sense Companion that will provide you with useful reminders — like carrying an umbrella if it is going to rain, restaurants suggestions for lunch, and more.

Like the HTC 10, the U Ultra sports capacitive navigation keys at the front, with the fingerprint sensor integrated into the home button. The phone also lacks a 3.5mm jack, with the USB-C port doing the audio duties. On the audio front, the U Ultra features USonic4 that analyses your inner ear and optimises the output from the phone accordingly. HTC is also using a BoomSound setup similar to that of the HTC 10, with the woofer located at the bottom and the earpiece at the top acting as a tweeter.

The HTC U Ultra will be available in select markets from Q1, 2017.
