From the outside, the One M9 barely seems like an upgrade over its predecessor — One M8. However, under the hood, the One M9 packs in some serious hardware upgrades and fixes some of the weak points of the One M8, including a better camera.

HTC has been criticized by many for the 4MP ‘UltraPixel’ sensor that it used on the One M7 and One M8 because of its poor performance in daylight and the lack of details in the photos shot with it. With the M9 though, the company has placed the UltraPixel sensor in the front, and switched to a 20MP f/2.2 camera module from Toshiba on the rear. It is also using a sapphire glass to avoid scratches deteriorating the camera performance with time.

But how well does the One M9 camera actually perform? Check out these unedited camera samples taken from the handset below and judge for yourself.

You can find the full resolution 20MP photos from the One M9 here. Make sure to judge the quality of the camera on the basis of the full-size photos only.

In case you are not impressed with the camera performance, you will be glad to know that these shots were taken on February 12, 2015 with a non-final unit of the One M9.

None of the photos in the album, however, have been shot in low-light, which is where the One M9’s camera struggles as per the initial hands-on from multiple publications. Thankfully, HTC is still working on tweaking the camera performance of the One M9, so there is still room for improvement before the device hits the shelves later this month.

So, what do you think of the One M9’s camera from the above image samples?
