While Hangouts, the messaging app from Google, is probably one of the more prominent apps on any Android-based device, it’s yet to receive a major Material Design makeover.

According to images that have surfaced from Android Police recently, that’s changing soon. The images, which depict a much flatter, slightly darker aesthetic than Hangouts’ current version, does indeed look like a Material Design makeover. The color actually extends up into the status bar, too, which will give it a nice green hue when the application is active on your handset.

Some other changes that the new Hangouts app will introduce is a slightly tweaked hamburger menu button, as it will no longer be shoved up directly to the edge of the app. Hangouts will also get an upgraded app icon, and an updated navigation drawer.

Google’s most recent update was to the YouTube app, which was released on December 6.

There’s no word just yet when this update will start the rollout, but it will probably be soon enough.
