Bloomberg: HTC made less than $1 million a month during Q1 2013, One delays to blame

According to Bloomberg, HTC just posted a first quarter net income of $2.8 million. That means HTC made, on average, less than $1 million per month during the first three months of this year. Now granted, nearly every other handset maker posts losses, but still, this is the sixth quarter in a row of decline for HTC.

Put another way, HTC’s Q1 2013 profits are down 98% compared to the same quarter a year ago.

As for revenues, they hit $1.42 billion. Assuming the average HTC phone sells for $400, that means HTC sold around 3.5 million devices. Hopefully HTC will sell more this quarter thanks to the release of the One, but that phone is facing delays due to component shortages. The camera module is a custom ST Microelectronics part, and the aluminum body is hard to make.

Update: Several people have reached out to me to say that my $400 ASP estimate is way too high. It’s far lower. Still, it looks like HTC sold only around 5 million phones during the quarter.
