Nokia denies reports of re-entering the smartphone market

Nokia has issued a statement officially denying recent rumors and reports of the company getting back into the smartphone market.

A report from a Chinese website from last week cited the President of Nokia China and said that the Finland-based company is looking to return to the smartphone market with an Android device in 2016.

However, a statement from Nokia Finland shoots down these rumors.

“Nokia notes recent news reports claiming the company communicated an intention to manufacture consumer handsets out of a R&D facility in China. These reports are false,” Nokia statement said.

Nokia’s smartphone division was acquired by Microsoft last year, and the terms of contract with the Redmond company forbids it from entering the smartphone market before 2016.

Since being acquired by Microsoft, the leftover part of Nokia has released an Android tablet — the N1 — built by Foxconn, though it is only available for purchase in China.
