Chinese manufacturer Vivo is one of the biggest smartphone brands in the region, along with Huawei, Oppo, Gionee, and the likes. Given the highly competitive nature of the mobile industry, there’s a race within the region to bring out the newest innovations on their respective devices. It seems like Vivo is now on the verge of becoming the first company to offer a phone with an in-display fingerprint scanner.

This refers to a fingerprint scanner that is embedded within the display without requiring a separate hardware button. It was initially rumored that Apple would take this route with the iPhone X, but the company decided to ditch the fingerprint scanner altogether in favor of the new Face ID sensor.

Vivo revealed this particular phone at the CES event earlier this month, but now we have a launch date for the handset. The company will officially reveal the phone on the 24th of January, which is just two days from now.

The phone, known as the Vivo X20 Plus UD, will be unveiled at a dedicated event in Beijing. Other hardware details are scarce right now, but we expect the fingerprint scanner to be one of the biggest highlights of the phone.

This could finally pave the way for other manufacturers to adopt this technology on their smartphones. It must be noted that Vivo has been working on this particular concept since last year, so it’s not a plan that came into fruition overnight.
